Veterans from the Tuscaloosa Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Alabama and members of a local VFW Post joined together on Thanksgiving to share a meal and some camaraderie.
Some patients from the medical center were released to partake in the holiday festivities. According to the Tuscaloosa News, the event was managed by post members and another auxiliary group who spent the day preparing and hosting the event.
Veterans from the hospital said they were “happy to spend the holiday at the VFW.” VFW members enjoyed serving their fellow comrades in arms and the fellowship the event provided.

Veterans enrolled in the Audie Murphy Veterans Hospital healthcare system in San Antonio, Texas, are complaining that they are getting substandard care.
A group of veterans met with the media to air their grievances and bring attention to what they believe is a problem at the VA. According to San Antonio’s KSAT 12, the veterans cited delayed appointments and rude treatment as problems that need to be addressed by the hospital’s new administrator, Marie Weldon.
Although she was reportedly asked “several times” by the station to respond to the veterans’ concerns, she refused an interview and instead issued a statement, saying that the VA is “committed to providing excellent customer service and expect employees to treat all veterans with respect.”

A 150-acre VA medical campus is being built in Las Vegas and construction teams are working to reduce their waste and recycle where possible on the project.
The complex, which will include a 90-bed hospital, 120-bed nursing home and a VA benefits office will cost $600.4 million. Contractors who started the project recycled about 50% of their waste. Most recently, however, the current team is boasting a 90% recycle rate.
A recycling company sorts waste on site and shops recyclables to purchasers. The project is also reusing local materials, including part of Interstate 15, according to the Las Vegas Sun.
The VA’s new medical complex in Las Vegas should be completed in 2011.

The VA and Kaiser Pemanente, a private health care organization, plan to partner on a new project which will hopefully deliver better service to our nation’s veterans.
A pilot program will be tested in the San Diego which will allow for both government and private medical providers to easily exchange medical records regarding veteran patients. Veterans in the area who receive care from both the VA and doctors in the Kaiser Permanente network will be mailed letters asking if they’d like to participate in the program.
Records will be shared “electronically, safely, securely, and privately” allowing for a better continuity in care.
This could have interesting implications for a veteran applying for disability, so stay tuned to find out if the VA expands this program in the future.

Filipino veterans who served in WWII have until February 16, 2010, to claim a one-time lump sum payment of $15,000. The payment was authorized in the Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, which was signed into law by President Obama on February 17, 2009.
Filipinos who are US citizens are entitled to the full $15,000 payment, and non-US Filipino WWII veterans can receive $9,000. So far the VA has paid out $105 million and processed more than 11,000 claims for the Filipino World War II Veterans Equity Compensation (FVEC).
Accepting the benefit will not affect any other benefits your are currently receiving.
Read more about how to apply for the benefit by February 16, 2010.

Questionnaires completed by “tens of thousands” of troops are missing according to a recent article by the AP. Approximately 20% of the surveys for a specific period identified by the Government Accountability Office are missing.
The surveys were completed by troops returning from combat 3 to 6 months after they came home, and are part of a program designed to measure the mental and physical health of our troops. Servicemembers fill out the forms electronically and can request to see a counselor during the questionnaire process.
While the loss of these forms is alarming, troops in need of counseling may soon have another opportunity to get connected to mental health professionals. President Obama recently signed legislation that will require a face-to-face screening of every service member returning from war.

Senator Benjamin Cardin (D- Md.) is leading the discussion on the prescription of anti-depressants to our troops in the field. Senator Cardin has ordered the Department of Defense to compile a report on the estimated number and percentage of troops who have been prescribed antidepressants since June 2005.
There is a fear that antidepressants are being prescribed to help troops cope with multiple deployments and stress with little medical supervision. Such medical supervision may not be available to those who are on the move in a combat zone.
The suicide rate for the troops has been climbing since the wars began. A statement from Senator Cardin’s website reads, “We can take steps to limit multiple deployments and extended separations, but we also must work to remedy the strains and deteriorating mental health of so many of our combat troops.”

The veterans non-profit organization, Honor Flight, held an open house yesterday for more than 800 people to gather and reminisce.
The organization, which regularly flies WWII veterans to DC to visit the WWII memorial, was founded in 2005. That year, they sent 137 veterans on the trip. Honor Flight has enjoyed so much support from the public, as well as widespread publicity, and last year they sent 18,000 veterans on the journey to see the memorial.
The event gave veterans who have been on an Honor Flight a chance to meet each other and reminisce about their WWII experiences. They also enjoyed a ceremony which included members of the Springfield Air National Guard Base.

An apartment complex in New Orleans is scheduled to be demolished to make room for a $30 million development project. The complex had been vacant since Hurricane Katrina and was an eyesore. The 12 new buildings that will be built in its place will contain 284 units and 25% of them will be used to provide veterans with free housing.
Operation Homefront, a nonprofit that helps troops, is partnering with Love Outreach Fellowship on the project. The development will be called West Point and will be located on Westbend Parkway in Algiers.
Phil Gibson, the director of Love Outreach Fellowship told a local news station that the facility will provide marriage counseling, budgetary counseling and educational guidance for veterans returning from the war.

In a recent press release, the VA announced that it plans to implement 50 recommendations made by a blue-ribbon panel appointed to advise the VA on “strengthening relationships with medical schools and other colleges and universities for health care professionals.”
According to the press release, the VA manages the largest medical education and health professions training program in the U.S. Nearly two-thirds of all physicians in the U.S. have trained in a VA facility at some point in their career.
Do you see the large number of students and recent graduates in VA hospitals as a benefit, or would you prefer a treating physician with years of experience under his or her belt? Let us know your thoughts in our forum where you can sound off on your experience with the VA healthcare system.
